Frequently Asked Questions
-
What exactly does a doula do?A doula is a trained, non-medical birth professional who provides emotional, physical, and informational support before, during, and after childbirth. As your doula, I’ll walk alongside you during pregnancy to prepare for birth, be by your side during labor with comfort measures and advocacy, and check in after birth to help with recovery and newborn care. I’m not here to replace your medical provider—I’m here to make sure you feel heard, supported, and empowered every step of the way.
-
Do doulas deliver babies? No. A doula is not a midwife or doctor and does not deliver the baby or provide medical care. My role is to support you emotionally and physically—helping with pain relief techniques, staying calm and focused, and making sure your birth plan is respected. I work alongside your chosen care team to ensure you have the best possible experience.
-
Will a doula support me if I’m planning a hospital birth?Absolutely! Whether you're giving birth at a hospital in Kansas City, a birthing center, or at home, my job is to support your choices. Many of my clients give birth in hospitals, and I’ve worked with a variety of care teams to make sure moms feel respected, safe, and heard—no matter the setting.
-
Can I have a doula if I’m getting an epidural or C-section?Yes! Doulas support all birth experiences. I’ve supported moms who choose medicated births, unmedicated births, and cesarean sections. My role doesn’t change—I’m still there to advocate for you, offer comfort, and make sure you and your partner feel informed and emotionally supported through it all.
-
What’s the difference between a doula and a midwife?Midwives are trained medical professionals who can deliver babies and provide prenatal and postpartum care. Doulas, on the other hand, are non-medical and focus on emotional and physical support. I don’t replace your doctor or midwife—I complement them, ensuring that you feel centered, calm, and confident throughout your experience.
-
What if my spouse wants to be my main support person—how does a doula fit in?Great question! The goal of a doula is never to replace your spouse or birthing partner—in fact, we enhance their role. Many partners feel overwhelmed or unsure how to even help during labor. I guide them with practical ways to support you, help answer questions, and make sure they feel empowered and involved too. Together, we create a strong support team around the most important person: you!
-
How early should I hire a doula? Most families reach out in the second trimester, but it’s never too early or too late to connect. The sooner we begin, the more time we have to get to know each other, build trust, prepare your birth plan, and talk through any concerns. I personally serve clients across the greater Kansas City area, including Independence, Blue Springs, and Lee’s Summit, and we offer free consultations if you’re curious but not ready to commit just yet.
-
What if I go into labor in the middle of the night? Will you still be there?Of course! Birth doesn’t run on a schedule, and neither do I. Once your labor begins, I’m available 24/7 to join you when you’re ready. You’ll never have to worry about being alone or unsupported—no matter the hour.
-
Is virtual doula support actually effective? It can be! For families outside the Kansas City area or during special circumstances, virtual doula support offers many of the same benefits. We’ll meet via video for prenatal visits, discuss how you're feeling, plan your birth together, and I’ll stay available during labor to provide real-time support, guidance, and comfort measures remotely.
-
Do you offer payment plans?Yes. I believe every mother deserves support, no matter their financial situation. As long as the payment is paid in full at least a month before the due date, the timing and flexibility of the individual payments is completely customized to fit your needs. Reach out and let’s chat about what works best for you!
